Diversity
The variety of characteristics that people possess, such as race, culture, and beliefs. Factors include age, ethnicity, gender, religion, abilities and socioeconomic status.
Discrimination
Treating individuals unfairly because of differences in race, culture, gender, etc. Example: Denying someone a job because of their race.
Segregation
Separating people based on their characteristics. Example: Requiring people to sit in separate areas based on ethnicity.
Scale of Attitudes
Hate/Violence
Intense dislike toward a person or group, often resulting in negative actions or behaviors.
Prejudice
Preconceived opinion about a person or group without knowing all the facts, often based on stereotypes.
Bias
A preference or inclination, especially one that inhibits impartial judgment, usually based on stereotypical views.
Dislike
Withholding approval from a person or group; an attitude of distaste.
Tolerance
Allowing differences to exist or occur without interference, even if you disagree.
Acceptance
Acknowledging differences but feeling the need to approve or give permission for them to occur, implying a position of power.
Respect
Valuing diversity in others and challenging your own personal beliefs and attitudes.
Mutual Understanding
Appreciating and supporting the rights of others while combating negative attitudes and behaviors.
Celebration
Nurturing and treating people with sincerity, valuing their worth, and advocating for their rights.
Stereotypes
Generalized beliefs about groups, often leading to assumptions that are not accurate.
Empathy
Understanding and sharing the feelings of another person by putting yourself in their shoes.
Bystanders & Racial Discrimination
Individuals who observe acts of discrimination and have the potential to intervene to prevent it.
Effective Communication
Clearly exchanging ideas to ensure the message is understood; involves clarity, active listening, and constructive feedback.
Conflict Resolution
Resolving opposing thoughts or actions by open communication and listening to find a solution.
Consent
Giving clear agreement or permission for a specific action, expressed through affirmative words or actions.
Power in Relationships
The ability to influence or control others; balanced relationships thrive on equality and respect.
Compassion vs. Empathy
Compassion is wanting to help others, while empathy is understanding their feelings. Compassion often leads to action.
Strengths
Qualities people naturally excel in, such as creativity or patience. Recognizing strengths involves noticing areas where one performs well.
Motivation
The drive to achieve goals, either from within (internal) or from outside sources (external).
Health and Skill Components of Fitness
Health components include cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility; skill components focus on agility, balance, coordination.
