What is an allegory?
A story with characters and events that stand for general concepts and ideas.
What is an alliteration?
When the same sound repeats in a group of words.
What is an allusion?
An implied or indirect reference to a person, event or thing or to a part of another text.
What is an analogy?
A comparison of two otherwise unlike things based on resemblance of a particular aspect.
What is a denotation?
The objective meaning of a word.
What is a connotation?
Something suggested by a word or thing.
What is an exaggeration (hyperbole)?
An exaggerated statement or claim that is not meant to be taken literally.
What is a metaphor?
Compares two unlike things without using “like” or “as”.
What are opposites?
Contrast two opposing ideas.
What is an onomatopoeia?
Words that imitate or mimic the sounds they describe.
What is an oxymoron?
Combines two contradictory or opposite words in a single phrase.
What is a personification?
Giving human traits to an inanimate object or animal.
What is a pun?
A play on words with the same sound, but different meanings.
What is a rhetorical question?
A question not intended to require an answer.
What are staccato sentences?
Place emphasis on key words to create an overall effect, such as humor or suspense.
What is a simile?
Directly compares two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”.
What is a symbol?
An object or action that represents something other than what it is.
What is an understatement?
Creates the reverse effects and adds a touch of irony by making the fact seem less significant.
