Rational Choice Theory
Criminals weigh up the pros and cons of commuting a crime and make a rational choice on whether or not to offend
Broken windows Theory
signs of disorder will lead to more disorder A building with a broken window that has been left unrepaired will give the appearance that no one cares and no one is in charge
Socialisation of the Underclass
younger people were socialised into an anti-work, high-crime and teen-pregnancy culture
Zero Tolerance Policing
low-level crime should not be tolerated and severe penalties should be in place for anti-social behaviour and minor incivilities in order to deter more serious crime
Situational Crime Prevention
aims to increase risk and/or minimise reward. Increased risk can be achieved by minimising the number of suitable targets or adding ‘capable guardians’
Target Hardening
improving the security of a property to reduce the risk of crime
Environmental Crime Prevention
suggests that the design of buildings, landscaping and outdoor environments can either encourage or discourage crime. relies on the idea that physical signs of disorder or crime give off the impression that there is low social control/enforcement, which attracts and encourages criminal activity
