16
Q

How can you group the challenges created by Rio’s growth

A

ACCESS TO RESOURCES + SANITATION
ACCESS TO SERVICES
MANAGING GROWTH (INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS)
CRIME,UNEMPLOYMENT,ENVIRONMENTAL

17
Q

How has Rio’s growth caused problems with access to water supply

A

POPULATION GROWTH means that it is hard to supply water to all Rio’s residents. It has also led to the creation of FAVELAS which are difficult to connect to the main water supply as they are informal settlements. Illegal connections from favela residents also disrupt the water supply
Therefore, 12% OF THE POPULATION LACK ACCESS TO CLEAN RUNNING AND DRINKING WATER

18
Q

How has Rio’s growth caused problems with access to electricity and energy

A

Rio’s HIGH POPULATION places a heavy load on the electricity supply. FAVELAS, especially, which are DENSELY POPULATED, experience frequent power cuts.
Favelas are also hard to connect to the main electricity supply so access is difficult
-Disrupts schools, businesses e.t.c.

19
Q

How has Rio’s growth caused problems with sanitation

A

Rio’s infrastructure struggles to provide sufficient waste and sewage disposal systems for the LARGE POPULATION. During rainy seasons, the system is overwhelmed and sewage overflows unto streets.
FAVELAS also increase the sanitation problem as they are informal settlements. They cannot be easily connected to the sewage system so for e.g. in ROCINHA, there are open sewers. They also have narrow and unpaved roads so refuse collection is difficult

20
Q

How has Rio’s growth caused problems with access to education

A

Rio’s growth has LED to the EXISTENCE OF FAVELAS.
The high rates of unemployment in favelas and poor policing mean that there are high crime rates which cause frequent school closures and disruptions.
Many favelas also lack facilities like schools so children have to travel long distances to get to a school. This discourages parents from sending them to school.
ONLY HALF OF CHILDREN CONTINUE EDUCATION PAST 14

21
Q

How has Rio’s growth caused problems with access to healthcare

A

Rio’s HIGH POPULATION is difficult and expensive to provide healthcare for
Favelas also have limited healthcare facilities as they are INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS. The narrow and unpaved roads also make them inaccessible to emergency health services

22
Q

How has Rio’s growth caused problems with crime

A

Rio’s population growth has led to the existence of favelas. There are high levels of unemployment in favelas so crime rates are high. Favelas are also INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS so there is poor policing. Because of this, criminal gangs commonly run favelas- affects tourism

23
Q

How has Rio’s growth cause problems with unemployment

A

Rio’s high population means there are not enough jobs and so, high levels of unemployment. There is also a lack of formal employment and 3.5 MILLION PEOPLE WORK IN THE INFORMAL SECTOR.
They generate no tax and have no benefits, insurance or worker rights

24
Q

Rio’s growth causing problems with managing growth

A

Growth has been difficult to manage in Rio and this has led to the creation of FAVELAS by many of the city’s poorer residents.
FAVELAS are informal settlements built by the urban poor in Rio

25
Disadvantage of FAVELAS
-High population density and poor living conditions and sanitation so diseases spread fast -Housing is poor quality and dangerous to live in. IN 2010, HEAVY RAINFALL DESTROYED MANY HOMES IN FAVELAS AND 200 PEOPLE WERE KILLED - Are cut of form essential services and resources such as the water and electricity supply.(Affects quality of life and also leads people to tap electricity illegaly causing fires)
26
How has Rio's growth caused environmental problems
AIR POLLUTION WATER POLLUTION WASTE DISPOSAL
27
AIR POLLUTION in Rio
Rio is THE MOST CONGESTED CITY IN SOUTH AMERICA in terms of traffic congestion.
28
WATER POLLUTION in Rio
50 TONNES OF INDUSTRIAL WASTE IS DUMPED IN GUANABARA BAY DAILY The sewage system is also frequently overwhelmed so sewage flows into the bay
29
WASTE DISPOSAL in Rio
RIO GENERATES 3.5 MILLION TONNES OF WASTE ANNUALLY due to its high population. However, most of this is not collected but flows into Guanabara bay.
30
How is urban planning being used to improve the QUALITY OF LIFE for the urban poor in Rio
The FAVELA BAIRRO PROJECT
31
What type pf project is the Favela Bairro Project
It is a SITE AND SERVICE PROJECT Actions are being taken BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES to improve Favelas and introduce services and facilities and residents are being equipped with materials, skills and finances to improve their homes.
32
ACTIONS included in the Favela Bairro Project
-Paving roads -Improving drainage/sewage and water supply systems(In the FAVELA COMPLEXO DO ALMEAO, this helped 26,000 people) -Creating training programs to give people skills -Improvement of fragile and poorly built houses -Introducing Pacifying Police Units -Introducing essential servives such as schools, hospitals, recreational areas e.t.c. -Giving people support to legally own their homes
33
FAILURES of the Favela Bairro Project
-Infrastructure improvements were not properly maintained so paved roads, for example, caused problems of flooding peoples' houses over time -Improvements to the favelas made house prices and rents increase so homelessness levels increased in some areas. -Training programs to acquire skills were not easily accessible to all people
