A

kaiser before Hitler came to power. Wanted to maintain a powerful army and build up large navy. Wanted Germany to have global power and have an empire to rival Britan’s.

A

Germany began to industrialise supported by powerful German businessmen. In 1913 Germany was producing as much coal and more iron and steel as Britain some of these rich business men became very rich and powerful.

A

many workers who where being paid by these rich businessmen where being underpaid with poor working conditions. Caused the rise of trade unions and by 1914 over 3 million workers had joined trade unions. A new party the social democratic party (SPD)became popular among workers. some where extremists and wanted to start a revolution against the kaiser.

A

a huge amount of money was sent into expanding Germanys navy as the kaiser wanted a large navy to help him take over other countries. this meant taxes where increase to pay for the money the kaiser had borrowed.

how did the first world war effect politics

A

British stopped sending food supplies to Germany which caused food shortages. Germany became more democratic so that the enemies would treat Germany more fairly. Kaiser allowed main political parties to form a new government and transferred some of his power to the reichstag - German citizens where still not satisfied.

protests broke out by sailors and workers and soldiers joined. Kaiser realised he had lost control, his army and general refused to support him

A

lots of different politcal parties had seats in the reichstag - difficult to be the majority and made law making a slow process.
many people did not like this system and wanted the return of the kaiser
