river basin case study Flashcards
(14 cards)
where is the eden basin
north - west england in the lake district
where is the river edens source and mouth
penine hills in south cumbria and its mouth is solway firth near scotland
what is the name of the water fall in river eden
hell gill force and is found near the source
what is the change in rock type in the hell gill force waterfall
from hard limestone to soft limestone
how have v shaped valleys been formed in the eden basin
many streams flow down the steep slopes of the hill from around 600m above sea level
how are meanders formed in the eden basin
more tributaries join the river it gets bigger which means more erosion
in the lower course the river becomes wider and flatter
some oxbow lakes have formed
where are floodplains found
carlisle is built on the river eden flood plain
low lying land
flood plain has been built up from flooding
how has the river eden been managed using flood walls
10km of flood walls and embankments have been built around carlisle to reduce effect of flooding
they interrupt natural processes of the river and prevent the formation of meanders and building up of flood plains
how have reserviors managed the river eden
castle carrock beck has been dammed to create a reservoir
reservoirs limit natural flow downstream and material carried by water is deposited in the reservoir and the not the river
how has planting trees helped manage river eden
near dalston 1000 trees have been planted to reduce flooding
the river will have less energy reducing lateral and vertical erosion meaning meanders take longer to form
how is the river eden basin influenced by temperature
mild winters cause much colder ground such as around the river eden
freeze thaw weathering can break up the exposed rock in the upper course of the river which could lead to mass movement and the material is added to the river
how is the river eden influenced by rainfall
intense rainfall makes the ground saturated and heavier which can cause river banks to slide into the river
heavy rain can increase volume of water in the river which increases erosion
how does the geology of the river basin influence the geomorphic processes
igneous rocks such as those in the west of the basin tend to be permeable
because water cannot soak into the ground high rainfall causes lots of streams which have lots of power to erode vertically creating steep sided valleys
how else does geology affect the river basin
in the middle and lower course of the river the valley is made of softer sandstone
the increase in energy in the lower course means there is lots of lateral erosion which forms meanders and river cliffs
