3
Q

what is at the centre of the earth

A

a core
- the inner is a ball of solid iron and outer is liquid

9
Q

what happens when an oceanic plate meets a continental plate

A

a destructive plate boundary occurs and the denser plate (oceanic) is forced downing mantle and destroyed

11
Q

what is a collision plate boundary

A

both planets are made from continental plates and move towards each other which causes both plates to be forced upwards creating mountains.

12
Q

what is a constructive plate boundary

A

two plates moving away from eachother and causes magma to rise to fill the gap and cools creating a new crust.

13
Q

what is a conservative plate boundary

A

when two plates are moving sideways past eachother or in the same direction and crust isn’t created or destroyed

15
Q

how is volcano created at a destructive plate boundary

A

oceanic plate moves down into the mantle where its destroyed
a pool of magma forms and rises through the cracks in the crust called vents
magma erupts onto the surface forming a volcano

16
Q

what does a volcano erupt when it erupts

A

lava, gases, ash

17
Q

what is a hotspot

A

normally volcanoes form at plate boundaries but there are some areas away from plate boundaries with lots of volcanoes

18
Q

what is a composite volcano

A

occur at destructive plate boundaries, the eruption starts with ashy explosions then thick lava.

19
Q

what is a shield volcano

A

occur last hotspots or constructive margins and are not very explosive and only contain lava.
the lava is runny.

20
Q

what are some ways earthquakes are managed

A

networks of seismometers and lasers are used to monitor earth movements
warnings can be sent via internet or SMS

21
Q

how are some buildings designed to resist earthquakes

A

rubber or springy materials placed at the base of building which absorb the shock
Diagonal steel bars are added inside the walls to make them stronger This stops the building swaying too much.
