Riverbed
The bottom of the river channel.
Riverbank
The sides of the river channel.
Meander
A bend or curve in a river.
Tributary
A smaller river which flows into the main river.
Confluence
The point at which two river meet.
Vertical erosion
A river cuts down into the ground helped by gravity in the upper cource.
Lateral erosion
A river cuts into the land either side of the river to creat a wider valley.
V-shaped valley
Foun in the upper port of the river valley where vertical erosion create steep slopes.
Floodplain
Areas of flat land found either side of the river created by lateral erosion.
Long profile
The view of a river length ways from source to mouth.
Cross profile
Cutting across the river so you can see the shape of the river channel.
Velocity
The speed of the warter.
Interlocking spur
Outcrops of land the river flows around in the upper cource.
Warterfall
A vertical drop of th eriver caused by hard rock resistance to eroad
Gorge
A vertical sided valley caused by the cutting back of a waterfall upstream.
Plunge Pool
A deepened section of the riverbed at the bottom of a warterfall.
Undercutting
Soft rock is eroded faster then the harder rock above causing it to collapse.
River cliff
Steep sided riverbank caused by erosion on the outside of a meander.
Slip of slope
Gentle sloped riverbank caused by deposition on th inside of the meander.
Levee
Araised embankment found along the river in the middle.
Ox-bow Lake
A meander bend which has become separated from the river by deposition as it has straightened its course.
Estuary
A river mouth which has become flooded with sea water to become tidal.
