rivers Flashcards
vshaped valled, meanders, oxbow lakes, levees, waterfalls (4 cards)
v shaped valley
a river vertically erodes the land between Interlocking Spurs. valley sides are slowly broken down through weathering and the material is transported via gravity and rainfall towards the channel. process then steepens the sides creating a v shaped valley
meanders
deep and shallow water causes the current to swing side to side creating bends. Water flows faster on the outside and erodes the riverbank hydraulic action occurs and erosion creates a river Cliff. inside the river the water flows slowly and deposits its materials creating a river beach erosion continues creating a meander.
ox bow lake
An oxbow Lake is formed when a meander in a river becomes very curved over time. The river erodes the outer banks and deposits material on the inner banks, making the meander even tighter. Eventually, it keeps eroding the river as it cuts through the narrow neck of the meander, and the river flows straight, leaving the old bend cut off.
levee
A levee is a raised bank Found next to a river. It forms when a river floods and spreads out over the land. As the water slows down it drops heavier materials like sand or gravel right next to the river. Over many floods the material builds up to create a natural embankment
