RNA molecules and Translation - Ribosomal RNA Flashcards
(11 cards)
What part of the ribosome does ribosomal RNA make up?
The core.
In what cells is rRNA most abundant in?
rRNA makes up almost 80% of the RNA species in rapidly diving cells.
Where in the cell is rRNA made and by what enzyme?
It is produced in the nucleolus by RNA Polymerase I.
True or False. RNA Polymerase I does not contain a C terminal tail.
True
True or False. rRNA transcripts are capped and polyadenylated.
False.
How many types of rRNA are in each ribosome?
4 types of RNA are in each ribosome. 28S, 18S, 5.8S and 5S.
What precursor do the 28S, 18S and 5.8S rRNAs come from?
A large 45S precursor.
what makes the 5S Rona different?
5S rRNa is transcribed by RNA polymerase III from a different gene cluster than 28S, 18S and 5.8S
How is the 45S precursor modified and by what?
Modification happens the addition of uridine-pseudouridine molecules as well as methylation. This is done by snoRNA and snoRNPs.
What cleaved the rRNA precursor?
Exonucleaeses and endonucleases.
What kind of bonds are the folded functional eukaryotic rRNA subunits stabilised by?
Hydrogen bonds.
