Rocks Flashcards
(27 cards)
What kind of grains does the rock granite have?
Interlocking grains
What kind of grains does the rock sandstone have?
Rounded grains
Which grain is most likely to absorb water?
- interlocking grains or rounded grains?
Rounded grains
What are porous rocks?
Rocks that absorb water
What kind of rock is softer?
Porous or non- porous
Porous
What are the three main types of rock?
Sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic
What is the formation of sedimentary rocks?
Sedimentation -> compaction -> cementation
Examples of sedimentary rock
Chalk
Limestone
Sandstone
Formation of igneous rocks
Molten (liquid) rock forms when rock melts. When the magma cools and solidifies, the rock igneous is formed
What kind of grains do igneous rocks have?
Interlocking grains
What happens to the crystals the slower the magma cools?
They are bigger
Examples of igneous rocks
Obsidian and basalt
Do igneous rocks contain any fossils?
No
Formation of metamorphic rocks
The rocks are heated and put under great pressure. They do not melt, but the minerals they contain are changed chemically forming metamorphic rocks.
True or False
Metamorphic rocks are made from melting rock
False
Examples of metamorphic rocks
Slate
Marble
What is slate formed from?
Shale
What is marble made from?
Limestone
Do metaphoric rocks contain fossils?
Only sometimes if they were formed from a sedimentary rock
What types of rock can metamorphic rocks be formed from?
Sedimentary and igneous
Example of physical weathering
Freezing and thawing
Example of biological weathering
People can cause biological weathering just by walking
Example of chemical weathering
Acid rain
What is acid rain?
When fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gases are burned, carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide escape into the air. This dissolves in the water in the clouds and make the rainwater more acidic.
