Rocks And Minerals Flashcards
(21 cards)
Thermal metamorphism
Metamorphism caused by heat conducted into country rock from an igneous intrusion
Crystalline
Rocks who’s crystals interlock with one another
Bedding
Layering or stratification in sedimentary rocks
Basin
A Ford or depression shaped like the right side of the bowl
Rock
A coherent naturally occurring solid consisting of an egg rate of minerals or a mass of glass
Magma
Molten rock beneath the earth surface
Lithification
The transformation of loose sediment in the solid rock through compaction and sedimentation
Ore
The naturally occurring material from which a mineral or minerals of economic value can be extracted profitably
Intrusive IR
Rock formed by the freezing of magma underground
Chemical SR
Sedimentary rock made up of minerals that precipitate directly from water solutions
Foliation
Layering formed as a consequence of the alignment of mineral grains or compositional banding and metamorphic rock
Organic SR
Sedimentary rock such as coal form from carbon rich relics of organisms
Burial metamorphism
Metamorphism to only do the consequences of a very deep burial
Strata
A succession of several layers or beds together
Lava
Molten rock that has flowed out onto the earth surface
Mineral
A homogeneous naturally occurring solid in organic substance with a definable chemical composition
Weathering
The process that break up and corrode solid rock eventually transforming into sediment
Extrusive IR
Rock that forms by freezing lava above ground
Clastic
Rocks who’s grains are stuck together by cement
Dynamic metamorphism
Metamorphism that occurs as a consequence of shearing alone with no change in temperature or pressure
Vesicles
Open holes in igneous rock formed by the preservation of bubbles in magma as the magma cools into solid rock
