Unit 1 Flashcards
(25 cards)
Pangea
A supercontinent that assembles at the end of the Paleozoic era
Continental drift
The idea that the continents have moved and are still moving across the earth
Ridge push force
A process in which gravity causes the elevated lithosphere with those for you at the mid ocean ridge access to push on the lithosphere that lives further away
Slab pull force
The force that down going plates apply to oceanic lithosphere at convergent margin
Sea floor spreading
Gradual widening of an ocean basin as new oceanic crust forms at a mid ocean ridge access and then moves away from the axis
Subduction
The process by which one oceanic plate Bends and sinks down into the ad Asthenosphere beneath another plate
Convergent boundary
Two plates move towards each other
Divergent boundary
Two plates move away from the axis of a mid ocean ridge
Transform boundary
Two plates slide past each other on a vertical fault surface
Paleomagnitism
The relatively rigid nonflammable layer of the earth con constituting the crust at the top of the mantle
Nebulae
A cloud of gas or dust
Stellar nucleosynthesis
The production of new larger Adams by fusion reactions stars the process generates more massive elements that were not produced by the Big Bang
Nebular theory
Concept of planets grow out of the rings if gas Dustin is surrounding a newborn star
Planetesimal
Tiny, solid pieces of rock metal that come collect in a planetary nebula and eventually accumulate to form a planet
Protoplanet
A body that grows by the accumulation of planetesimals but has not yet become big enough to be called a planet
Differentiation
A process early and a planet history during which Dennis iron alloy metal did and sink down words to form the core leaving less dense mantle behind
Crust
The rock that makes up the outer most layer of the earth
Mantle
A thick layer of rock below the earths crust and above the core
Core
The Dennis iron rich centre of the earth
Asthenosphere
The layer of the mantle that is relatively soft and can flow one acted on by force
Lithosphere
The relatively Bridget non-flowable layer of earth consisting the crust and top layer part of the mantle
The moho
The semi seismic velocity discontinued that defines the boundary between the earths crust and mantle
Epicentre
The point on the surface of the earth directly above the focus of an earthquake
Seismogram
The record of an earthquake produced by a seismograph
