Companionship
-they may fill the role of a child
- part of the family
- viewed as a companion
PAT
Pet as therapy - animal is used to provide support animals
started in hospitals
ESAs
Emotional support animal
they live with the owner and support one person
Equality Act 2010
PAT and ESA do not have the same legal protection as assistance animals e.g guide dogs
Farmed
are used to providing a product e.g cows for milk
has financial value to the client so does not have the same emotional response to treatment
Working
trained to fulfil a role that a human cannot complete and they have legal protection
military animals
police and law enforcement
medical
herding and retrieving
assistance
Breeding
usually undertaken for 1 of 3 reasons
- the animal ability to perform a job e.g sheep dogs
-farm animals bred for produce - their appearance to achieve a desired phenotype. usually linked to financial gain

-commitment
-investment of time and money
- research ( breed/ breeder)
-Adhere to relevant legislation
-preventative healthcare
-hard decisions
