Was a period in literature and art in Western civilation
In literature from 1750-1870
In music from 1830 through the 19th century
Common sounds of melancholy – emotion is a driver.

Music examples:
Prelude in E Minor – innovation in writing, with the piano chords. Emotions, melancholy, longing.
The Moldau- Nature, immersive, moving
Im Wunde Schone Monat Mai – Bittersweet, contradictions, nostalgia.
Er Ist Gekommen – Love, anticipation, excitement, fulfilment
Etude No.12 - Passion, drive, revolution, heroic ideas
Sabbath Night Witches – Supernatural, terror, awe
Piano Concerto No.1 - Heroic, innovative, the individual against the world.

Musical ideas that create the Romantic world

A

Contrast – Dynamics, textures, soundworlds

Virtuosity- Extreme difficulty, extreme ranges, new techniques

Novel ideas – Borrowing from past, trying new sounds, new emphasis on tone colours.

Innovation in form- Fragments and large forms. Collections of very short pieces and songs. Inventions of new large forms such as symphonic poems, rule breaking.

Large orchestras – with additional new instruments, such as saxophone, ophicleide etc.

Adding text- such as poems, quotations, etc.
