Storm on the island-Seamus Heany
The Prelude, London, Ozymandias
Storm on the island is about the political storm in Ireland about Northern Ireland being part of UK. The poet uses an extended metaphor of a storm to show it. It talks about the Storm destroying the Island showing that the political tension is destroying Ireland.
Quotes:”So that you can listen to the thing you fear” - Listen to Storm and Political unrest of Ireland
“Forgetting that it pummels your house too” - The Storm pummels your house, and the politics will also affect how you live.
Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley
Compare with MLD, The Prelude, Exposure and Storm on the island.
Ozymandias is a poem about a tyrannical ruler-Ramases who was very arrogant but paled in comparison to nature. It’s about Ozymandias’ statue that gets withered away by nature throughout time. It shows that nature is stronger than even the most strongest rulers.
“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings” - shows how arrogant Ozymandias is, also breaks rhythm.
“Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare” - Colossal wreck is an oxymoron and boundless and bare shows how insignificant Ozymandias was in the grand scheme of things.

Compare-Charge of the Light Brigade, Bayonet Charge, Ozymandias,
It based on the walk of the the author throughout London. London is about the harsh living conditions of the lower class in London. It talks about the struggles of children and how people in power weren’t doing anything about it. It shows the solemness and fear of the poor.
“The mind-forged manacles I hear” - Mind-forged manacles symbolises the lower class being stuck in the situation they are in, reinforced by the manacles.
“And the hapless soldier’s sign” - sadness and anger of the soldier, unfortunate.
The Prelude-William Wordsworth
Compare- Ozymandias, London
The Prelude is about a young Wordsworth stealing a boat and going out onto a lake and got scared by a giant mountain as he thought it was towering over him. He then returned the boat and ran.
“The horizon’s bound, a huge peak, black and huge”- Repetition of huge shows that Wordsworth is at a lost for words.
“Strode after me. With trembling oars I turned”- shows that he was genuinely scared of the mountain as he used trembling.
My Last Duchess-Robert Browning
Compare-Ozymandias, Bayonet Charge
My Last Duchess is about an insecure Duke who thought his duchess was being a little too friendly with another person. So he executed his Duchess. We read this through the eyes of an unknown guest that the Duke is giving a tour of the gallery.
“That’s my last Duchess painted on the wall” - Its like he own the Duchess an there’s going to be another one”
“Too easily impressed;she liked whate’er” - He was jealous of his wife blushing and being too friendly with people.
