War Peoms Flashcards
(6 cards)
Poppies-Jane Weir
Remains, War photographer
Poppies is about a mum who is suggested to be mourning the death of her child who died in war. It uses an extended metaphor of war throughout the poem. It uses lots of enjambment to give it a narrative tone.
Theme- not much time, war, dove
“Released a song bird from its cage” - Letting go of her emotions for him.
“The dove flew freely against the sky” - The dove signifies peace and it shows that the mum has made peace with her emotions.
Exposure-Wilfred Owen
Bayonet Charge, War photographer
Exposure is about Wilfred Owen’s time in the war and is writing about how he felt as if they were fighting for no reason. Extended metaphor of personification and weather. Can’t decide which is worse conflict of war or weather.
“But nothing happens” - Repeated throughout the poem showing that they are fighting for no reason and no one’s doing anything about it.
“Less deadly than the air that shudders.”- Shows that the weather is more dangerous than the bullets referred to in the line before. Caesura used to signify the danger of weather.
Bayonet Charge-Ted Hughes
Charge of the Light Brigade, Exposure
Bayonet charge is an about a soldier who was on autopilot mode and feels as if he wakes as he’s running across no man’s. The soldier sees that he has lost sight in why he is fighting and thinks that he should stop. Enjambement in stanza two to show that he can’t stop running.
“Sweating like molten iron from the centre of his chest” - Simile and molten iron in the centre of his chest makes him seem dehumanised as if he’s turned into a machine.
“King, honour, human dignity, etcetera” - List of why he should be fighting be he doesn’t feel as if he should. Made to feel dehumanised.
War Photographer- Carol Ann Duffy
Remains, Exposure, Bayonet Charge
War photographer is about a photographer who is in his darkroom processing his photos and memories of what they has seen in wars around the world. Caesura and Enjambement creates a narrative tone as if they are telling a story. Sorrowful tone throughout the poem showing the despicable actions of war.
“He earns his livings and they do not care” - He takes all of these unspeakable photos of the horrors of war and no one acts on it, no one even cares.
“A hundred agonies in black and white” - Metaphor for all the photos he has taken and that they were all about pain.
The Charge of The Light Brigade- Alfred Lord Tennyson - Bayonet Charge,
It’s about a 600 soldiers who were sent to charge at artillery because of misinformation through a letter. None of them showed any fear and all rode towards the artillery. The rhythm is like a horses hooves so the reader feels as if they are part of the Brigade. There is no clear rhyme throughout poem.
“Into the valley of death”-Biblical references “Valley of the shadow of death” as if they are charging right into the mount of hell.
“Noble six hundred” - Throughout play says “Rode the six hundred” but end on Noble six hundred to show that the writer shows respect towards the six hundred that rode.
Remains-Simon Armitage
War Photographer, Exposure
Remains is about a soldier who killed a looter without knowing if they were armed and got PTSD from it. Very colloquial language as it’s a re write of what the soldier said and it’s in a narrative style because of that. It’s written in a confessional tone as it’s the soldier trying to forgive himself.
“His bloody life in my bloody hands”- Metaphor to reflect guilt and he’s taking ownership of his actions by using the word my.
“Probably armed, possibly not” - is repeated throughout the poem and shows that the soldier had a bit of hesitation but ultimately killed him.
