Bruce biographical information/ training
At age 11 started classes in tap, ballet and acrobatics
Joined Rambert school at age 13 directly under Marie Rambert who influenced his early choreographic work which included strong techincal and balletic movement

About the migration from the old world to the new world, feeling of sadness of leaving an old home and losing touch with old roots and how people take with them threads of their old culture
MOVEMENT
Ballet, irish folk dancing, he wanted to create his own style blending irish and contemporary - didn’t want to be restricted by just the irish techique
VISUAL
Set - shows a port with a sea scape background enforcing the idea of immigration - a wooden pole which the dancers use to look out to sea

British/ irish (old) and american (new) folk songs

Starts in silence, dip sounds and wind effects, South American folk songs by a Chilean group
VISUAL
Set - the backdrop represents a rocky plain with mountain peaks and the mouth of a cave (entry to the under world) rock like structures on stage
Costume - skeleton image with body paint showing bone and muscle structures with black rags wrapped around them, skeletal masks
The dead - messy appearance, everyday clothes
Characters - the ghosts are oppressors, murderers and forcers of dictatorship. The dead are on their way to heaven or hell walking from life to death
THEME
Political oppresion and dictatorship in south america - universal story - could apply to poland or afghanistan with the cruetly, lack of human rights and suffering

Split into different sections with each one having a different Rolling Stones song - split up by transitions by blackouts
What are the themes of Roster?
The relationship between men and women through the metaphor of the mating ritual between animals

Describe the transition of LRR to Lady Jane
Closing LRR
Lighting dims and music fades
Female soloist continues dancing – she hugs herself and wraps one leg around the other
Cast for Lady Jane come on stage performing the Rooster strut
Opening Lady Jane
Lights come up
The men are adjusting their ties down stage and the women are backstage stood still
The female soloist from LRR is still dancing – she unfolds her arms and raises them bent whilst she shuffles her feet (happens in silence)
Music doesn’t start until a couple seconds after lights come up
When the music starts a blue wash fills the stage
