Root Operations Flashcards
(31 cards)
alteration
modifying the anatomic structure of a body part without affecting its function
principal purpose is to improve appearance
bypass
altering the route of passage of the contents of a tubular body part
ie to a downstream area of normal route/body part, to an abnormal route/dissimilar body part
one or more anastomosis with/without device
change
taking out/off a device and putting back identical or similar device, same body part, w/o cutting/puncturing the skin/mucous membrane
all change procedures are coded using approach external
control
stopping/attempting to stop postprocedural bleeding
site is coded as anatomical region, not specific body part
creation
making a new genital structure that does not physically take the place of a body part
only for sex change operations
destruction
physical eradication of all/portion of a body part by direct use of energy, force, or destructive agent
none of the body part is physically taken out
detachment
cutting off all or portion of upper/lower extremities
body part value is site of detachment, w/ qualifier if applicable to further specify
dilation
expanding an orifice or lumen of a tubular body part
natural or artificial orifice; accomplished by stretching tubular body part using intraluminal pressure or by cutting part of orifice/wall of tubular body part
division
cutting into a body part, without draining fluids/gases, in order to separate or transect a body part
all/portion of the body part is separated into two or more portions
drainage
taking or letting out fluids/gases from body part
excision
cutting out or off, w/o replacement, a portion of a body part
qualifier diagnostic used to identify excision procedures that are biopsies
extirpation
taking or cutting out solid matter from a body part
solid matter may be abnormal byproduct of biological function; may be imbedded in a body part/lumen of tubular structure; may or may not have been previously broken into pieces
extraction
pulling or stripping out or off all or a portion of a body part by the use of force
qualifier diagnostic used to identify extraction procedures that are biopsies
fragmentation
breaking solid matter in a body part into pieces
physical force applied directly/indirectly; matter may be abnormal byproduct of biological function or foreign body; pieces of solid matter are not taken out
fusion
joining together portions of articular body part rendering the articular body part immobile
body part joined together by fixation device, bone graft, or other means
insertion
putting in nonbiological appliance that monitors, assists, performs, or prevents a physiological function but does not physically take the place of a body part
inspection
visually and/or manually exploring a body part
visual performed w or w/o optical instrumentation; manual performed directly or through intervening body layers
map
locating the route of passage of electrical impulses and/or locating functional areas in body part
applicable only to the cardiac conduction mechanism and the central nervous system
occlusion
completely closing an orifice or lumen of a tubular body part
orifice can be natural or artificial
reattachment
putting back in/on all/a portion of a separated body part to normal/other suitable location
release
freeing body part from abnormal physical restraint
some restraining tissue may be taken out, none of body part is taken out
removal of device from
taking out/off device from body part
if replaced with similar device w/o puncturing/cutting skin/mucous membrane, root op is change; otherwise root op is removal
repair
restoring to extent possible a body part to its normal anatomic structure/function
used only when method to accomplish repair is not one of the other root operations
replacement
putting in/on biological/synthetic material that physically takes place/function of all/a portion of a body part
body part may be taken out, eradicated, rendered nonfunctional; removal coded for taking out device used in previous replacement procedure
