Q

What is an SRL and what does it do?

A

Self Retracting Lifeline
or “self-retracting lanyard”

Meet OSHA requirements to stop a fall in progress.
Per OSHA it is “a deceleration device which contains a drum wound line which may be slowly extracted from, or retracted onto, the drum under slight tension during normal employee movement, and which, after onset of a fall, automatically locks the drum and arrests the fall.”

Q

What is a traveler device and how is it used?

A

Travelers or a “rope grab”
Example: Lad-Saf™ flexible cable system
OSHA says it is “a deceleration device which travels on a lifeline and automatically frictionally engages the lifeline and locks so as to arrest the fall of an employee. A rope grab usually employs the principle of inertial locking, cam/lever locking, or both.”

Q

What is a position system and how is it used?

A

Positioning system (work-positioning system) means a system of equipment and connectors that, when used with a body harness or body belt, allows an employee to be supported on an elevated vertical surface, such as a wall or window sill, and work with both hands free. Positioning systems also are called “positioning system devices” and “work-positioning equipment.”

Q

What is a “Rescue Device” and what does it do?

A

Example: MILAN 2.0 HUB is THE standard rescue device in the industry with additional lifting function. With the help of the hand wheel, the casualty can be lifted over a short distance to release his lanyard and lower him safely. The device is optimised for personal rescue.

Q

How ofter should roped access safety gear be inspected?

A

Every 8 hour shift by individual using it
and
More often than yearly by “competent rescuer”

According to ANSI/ASSE Z359.2-2007 American National Standards Section 5.5.2 Fall protection equipment shall be inspected by the authorized person at least once at the beginning of each eight hour shift in which it is used to verify that it has not sustained any wear or damage that would require its removal from service. Fall protection and fall rescue equipment shall be inspected on a regular basis not to exceed one year (or more frequently if required by the manufacturer’s instructions) by a competent person or a competent rescuer, as appropriate, to verify that the equipment is safe for use. The inspection shall be documented

12
Q

Describe the difference between dynamic and static ropes.

A

Dynamic:
- Sport climbing rope
- Has stretch to absorb energy of fall
- Has elongation > 10%
- Not good for lifting gear, rappelling, or ascending

Static Rope:
- Working or Professional rope
- Little stretch
- Has elongation < 10%
- Good for hauling, lifting gear, rappelling, or ascending

A

13mm (1/2”) - FFPA standard for firefighting; Used of hauling systems, 8,000 pound test, heavier

11mm (7/16) - Standard for rope access, 6,500-7,500 pound test

9-10mm (3/8”=10.5mm) - used for Auto Decent devices, 5,000 pound test

A

Putting it on.

18
Q

Give 2 more names for a fall protection harness.

A

H-harness
4 D-ring harness

19
Q

What is harness slide?

A

When the harness moves on the body while loaded.

20
Q

The small Y-Lanyard snap hook attached to what part if the harness?

A

Dorsal D-Ring

21
Q

1) On our Y-Lanyard, what is at the end?
2) What is it’s load rating?
3 What is it’s gate strength?
4) Are the single or double/dual acting?

A

1) Snap hooks are at the end of the Y-Lanyard
2) Load rating = 5,171#
3 Gate strength = 3,600#
4) Dual/double action

22
Q

On the Y-Lanyard, what is the ring in the middle called and what can it be used for?

A
  • Rescue Ring
  • Allows for attachment of a rescue device that enables the load to be lifted off the victims Snap-hook tie off.
23
Q

Why are there two ends of a Y-lanyard?

A

The dual Y-lanyard allows for 100% tie off by leapfrogging the two ends if the Y.

24
Q

What is our Y-lanyard energy absorber called and how does it work?

A

1) “Shock Pack”
2) Slows the fall and lessons the impact force by the tearing of stitching.

  • Needs 12’ of drop space to be effective.
25
Q

1) The Petzl Grillon is used in what piece of equipment?
2) Are the carabiners double or triple action?
3) What type of rope does it use?
4) What is at each end of the rope?

A

1) The Petzl Grillon is part of the positioner.
2) Are the carabiners are triple action
3) It uses 10.5mm static rope.
4) “Sewn Loops” are at each end of the rope.

26
Q

What is the name of tue cable traveler we use and what are it’s key details?

A

3M Lad-Saf traveler by Sala
- It’s carabiner has a “stake” to prevent removal
- The “snail trail” allows for shock absorption of a fall by increasing stopping time
- Works on 3/8” cable

27
Q

What is the arrest force of the 3S Lift Rail Traveler and what is the key to safely using it?

A
  • 1350 pound arrest force
  • For safe use you must ensure top and bottom mechanisms are seated in the latter rail.
28
Q

What are the two parts of our Petzle Best helmet and what feature makes it electrical rated.

A
  • Shell & Suspension
  • Electrical rated helmets can not have vent holes
29
Q

What are stickers n helmets not advised?

A

They may cover damage during inspection.

30
Q

What does a load cell test do?

A

A load cell measures the force of a load when safety gear is tested.

31
Q

What is the maximum pounds of all force allowed for both the ANSI and OSHA when testing gear?

A
  • ANSI = 900
  • OSHA = 1800
32
Q

2) What other conditions would require gear to retired and replaced?

A

1) 10 years
2) After a fall, chemical exposure, worn material, or being faded by sunlight.

33
Q

What are the straps that can be used while handing in your harness after a fall and why are they important?

A
  • “Trauma Straps”
