1
Q

What was the aim of your systematic review project?

A

Evaluate the available digital technologies used in monitoring sleep in the elderly population in care homes and assisted living facilities. These included wearable and non wearable technologies

Q

What were some key findings from your review?

A

Smart lighting systems ( automatically adjust brightness and temperature temp to mimic circadian rhythm) and bright lighting systems had the best effect on sleep efficiency and sleep duration improvement, whilst assistive and robotic tech had the least effect on both

Q

Why is your topic relevant in pharmacy?

A

Sleep issues are common and under-addressed especially in a marginalised group such as the elderly; pharmacists can integrate digital health tools into patient care reducing the reliance of medicines such as benzodiazepines and z drugs.

Q

What were some limitations in your systematic review?

A

Short intervention periods limiting the assessment of longevity and suitability.
Small sample sizes,
Device reliability and wristband removal
Frightening appearances by robots, Ethical concerns in cognitively impaired patients

Q

What real-world application does your project have?

A

Sleep tech helps nursing staff help the residents behaviour, identify stressful moments, adjust intevrentions and improving care planning, and lastly early detection of sleep disorders

Q

Why did you choose a systematic review over a primary study?

A

It allowed me to identify gaps, trends, and overall efficacy across digital interventions for sleep, without needing extensive resources or patient recruitment.

Q

How did you select your inclusion/exclusion criteria?

A

Based on PICO framework

Adults over 60 in care homes or assisted living facilities that were using digital interventions for sleep
Compared to standard care or placebo
Outcomes could only be sleep related

Q

Which databases did you use and why?

A

5 databases as per prisma guidelines
Pubmed, embase, scorpus , web of science, IEEE xplore, ebsco

They were recommended by my tutor and covered a wide range of sleep and digital related research

Q

How might publication bias have impacted your findings?

A

Positive results are more likely to be published, which could skew findings towards efficacy and overlook less effective or negative results.

Q

How could your review be used to inform future research?

A

Highlights the need for longer-term studies, standardised outcome measures, and more real-world testing of digital tools.
