What Cripps had to offer was not something that Congress wanted to hear as dominion status was offered again when the demand was full independence. The mission failed

‘Quit India’ was shouted at British people and troops all over India demanding an end to British rule of India

What were the repercussions of the Quit India Campaign?

A

Gandhi urged demonstrators to be their own leaders leading to mass rioting, attacks and killings of Europeans and damage to government property over 3k deaths but the campaign didn’t receive enough support

When was the Bengal Famine and what caused it?

A

1943-44
Poor harvests, loss of imports, wartime price inflation and severe weather conditions caused the famine
Annual death rate rose from 1.2 million to 1.9 million and diseases due to malnutrition led people to die also
Price of rice had risen tenfold by May 1943

What did Wavell do to help sort out the Bengal famine?

A

He took action to coordinate rationing
Churchill initially refused to help as he thought it would damage Britains own war effort and 1-3 million died during the 3 year period
His request for 1 mil tons of grain was met with 250k tons of rice in 1944 and 450k tons of grain the same year

What was the Simla conference and why did it fail?

A

Wavell proposed to change the composition of the Executive Council to give equal proportions to Hindus and Muslims.
The conference reached a deadlock because Jinnah insisted that all Muslim members must be nominated by the Muslim league but Congress couldn’t accept this restriction
