How did Gandhi emerge?

A

Gandhi had experience as a young lawyer in South Africa and came back to India in 1914
His friendship with Gokhale led him to familiarise himself with Indian politics and in 1917 intervened in local situations and went on to forge relationships with up and coming regional leaders

What was the Lucknow Pact and when was it?

A

The Lucknow Pact was an agreement reached between the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League (AIML) at a joint session of both the parties held in Lucknow in December 1916. Through the pact, the two parties agreed to allow representation to religious minorities in the provincial legislatures.

Bal Tilak in Western India and Besant’s All India Home Rule League focused on domestic affairs and Jinnah joined Besant’s Home Rule League in 1917
They spread political awareness in provinces
but they ended up either arrested or interned

A

by the end of 1919 the aftermath had turned thousands of loyal Indians against the Raj and believed that Amritsar revealed the true face of British rule and any British reform intended towards Indian independence was a sham
