Personal foul
Foul committed by a player that involves illegal contact with an opponent while the ball is live
Common foul
A personal foul that is neither flagrant nor committed against a player trying for a goal
Player control foul
A common foul committed by a player when she is in control of the ball or by an airborne shooter
Team control foul
Common foul that is committed by a player of a team that has team control
Double personal foul
Two opponents commit fouls against one another at approximately the same time
Flagrant 1 personal foul
Excessive in nature and/or unnecessary but is not based solely on the severity of the act
Flagrant 1 examples (6)
1-excessive contact
2-not a play on the ball/to stop clock or keep from starting
3-pushing/holding a player to keep from scoring
4-deliberately fouling a player not directly involved in a play
5-contact with a player making a throw-in
6-contact by swinging of the elbow
Flagrant 2 personal foul
contact with an opponent that is not only excessive but severe or extreme while the ball is live
Simultaneous personal foul
Occurs when opponents commit personal fouls at approximately the same time but not against each other
Administrative technical foul
Occurs when there is a violation of rules pertaining to:
- court/equipment
- rosters
- benches
- illegal uniforms/#’s
- score book
- team delays
- excessive timeouts
- team’s fans
Bench technical
Involves unsporting conduct of bench personnel (10-4)
Direct technical
Refers to a tech assessed to a head coach for his or her own behaviors
Indirect technical foul
Refers to a tech assessed to a head coach for the actions of only bench personnel
Double technical foul
When opponents commit technical fouls against each other at approximately the same time
Flagrant 2 contact technical foul
- Occurs when the ball is dead and the contact is is excessive and severe.
Exception may be a foul committed by an airborne shooter
Flagrant 2 noncontact technical foul
Occurs when the ball is either live or dead and involves unsportsmanlike conduct that is extreme, sometimes persistent, vulgar or abusive
Contact dead ball technical foul
Occurs when the ball is dead and involves contact that is unnecessary, unacceptable and excessive, but does not rise to flagrant 2 contact technical
Player/Substitute technical foul
Involves the unsportsmanlike conduct of a player or sub
Simultaneous technical foul
Occurs when each team commits a technical foul at approximately the same time but not by opponents against each other.
False double foul
Occurs when there are fouls by both teams, the second of which occurs before the game clock is started after it is stopped for the first
Multiple foul
Occurs when 2 or more teammates commit personal fouls against the same opponent at approximately the same time
Continuous Motion is
a foul by the defense during the interval that begins when the normal throwing movement starts a try or with the touching on a tap and ends when the ball is clearly in flight
A player shall be in control when:
a) Holding a live ball; or
b) Dribbling a live ball while inbounds
A team shall be in control when:(4)
a) A player of the team is in control;
b) While a live ball is being passed between teammates;
c) When a player of that team has disposal of the ball for a throw-in; or
D) During an interrupted dribble
