A

A

He was an ineffective and inappropriate leader, who came to power too quickly and ill prepared. Russians wanted to get rid of him.

Although peasants earned their freedom, they had to pay for land. These payment redemptions caused a lot of discontent and led to strikes and riots as they were not treated fairly.

A

How did the growth of opposition contribute to the Revolution 1905?

A

Groups such as the Bolsheviks, Mensheviks and the SRs wanted a more revolutionary change. Support for these groups consisted of groups confined from small, educated section of society but they represented the growth in tensions and were more of a threat. They criticised the lack of freedom.

How did the Russo Japanese war contribute to the Revolution of 1905?

A

The war ended in complete disaster for the Russians. By 1905, there was considerable public anger as the economic situation was worsening and therefore strikes and unrest developed.

What contribution did Bloody Sunday have to the Revolution of 1905?

A

It weakened the loyalty of the common people and caused a lot of unrest, especially because the peasants were unable to meet redemption payments due to the increase in taxes. Rioting and seizure of properties took place.

What was Bloody Sunday?

A

On Sunday 22 January 1905, a group of poor peasants and workers, left by Father Gapon, and went to give a petition to the Tsar asking for food to be better distributed so less people would starve. They were carrying pictures of the Tsar to show their loyalty and crosses to show their trust in a god, emphasising that it was a religious march. Although, one of the soldiers panicked and opened fire. The Tsar wasn’t there but was blamed, resulting in strikes and demonstrations being spread throughout. The Tsar’s uncle - Grand Duke Serge - was even killed by the SRs.

What was the October Manifesto 1905?

A

This promised to set up an elected Parliament known as the Duma, allowing all classes to participate in the elections. It also granted freedom of both speech and religion. The Liberals saw it as a step towards democracy.
