What was the progressive movement?
A movement to correct the economic and social abuses of industrial society. Led to consumer protection, women’s suffrage, secret ballot, income tax, direct election of senators, and prohibition
Who were the progressives?
Believed the government should regulate big business, opposed laissez faire. Response to industrialization and urbanization because living conditions were unsafe and big businesses were unfair
What did Jane Adams do?
Provided housing for the poor
Who was Robert M LaFollette?
A progressive reformer who wanted to start a civil rights movement for African Americans, unsuccessful
What did WEB Du Bois do?
Formed the NAACP to end segregation and win equal rights
Who was booker t. Washington?
Believed education was the key to improve African American social status
Interstate commerce act?
Helped farmers and small businesses owners
Sherman antitrust act?
Attempted to limit power of monopolies
Clayton antitrust act?
Made unions legal
Gibbons v. Ogden?
Regulated trading between different states
Wabash v. Illinois?
Limited big business power
Federal reserve system?
Made by federal reserve act, intended to provide a stable supply of money and credit
What is progressive income tax?
From 16th amendment, those with high incomes should pay higher taxes
What is the spoils system?
When officials reward supporters with gov jobs
What did the Clayton antitrust act do?
Make labor unions legal
What are muckrakers?
Writers that exposed the social ills of inner cities (Upton Sinclair)
What was the populist party?
A political group of farming interests directed against banking and railroads. Opposed laissez faire
What was the granger movement?
Wanted to force railroads to lower freight fates and wanted monopolies regulated. Supported by farmers
New nationalism?
Policy to help the help the US solve industrialization problems
What is the big stick policy?
Theodore Roosevelt. Walk softly but carry a big stick. Intervening into other country affairs
