What was Reconstruction?
when southern states were brought back into the union
What was Lincoln’s plan for reconstruction?
The goal was to bring the south back into Congress. Forgive the south and move on
What were radical republicans?
Repubs that wanted the south to be harshly punished and opposed Lincoln’s plan
What is the solid south?
Name given to former confederate states after reconstruction because they always voted for democrats
Who took over after Lincoln was assassinated?
Andrew Johnson
How was Johnson in office?
Supported Lincoln’s plan, impeached due to radical republicans and firing secretary of war without senate approval, this failed
What amendments were made during reconstruction?
13: abolished slavery, 14: gave rights and protects African Americans, 15: gave African Americans the right to vote
what did Jim Crow laws, black codes, and klu klux klan attempt to do?
Attempts to restrict the freedoms of African Americans. Limited the effectiveness of the 13, 14, and 15 amendments
What did plessy v. Ferguson rule?
Separate but equal
What defined the new south?
Industrial development and growing new crops. Overproduction led to lower prices for farm goods and issues for farmers
What were carpetbaggers?
Northerners who moved south to participate in reconstruction governments
