.Parts - headpiece, cheekpiece, throatlash, browband & flash noseband, snaffle bit, rein.

.The rein aids - are used in conjunction with the leg and seat aids to control the horse.

.Bit lies on top of the tongue Inbetween the incisors & molars.

.The bit - must not protrude more than 1cm either side of the mouth and must be just high enough to create approximately two wrinkles in the corner of the lips.

.Is used to control & guide the horse. The action of the bit exerts pressure on certain points of the horse’s mouth or face.

.Bit pressure points - mouth & lip corners, mouth, tongue, chin groove, nose, poll & side of face.

.Young horse needs a simple bit (rubber covered single jointed snaffle) or horses hacking lightly i.e cob.

.Thin bit will be sharper.

.Needs to be checked yearly by a saddler and fitted by a saddler.

.Wrongly fitted saddle causes back problems and pain for the horse.

.If the saddle tree is damaged it will cause problems for the horse’s back.

.The saddle lies on the lumbar muscles, which cover the top of the ribs.

.Saddle must not touch the loins and not pinch the shoulders.

.See daylight through the gullet and saddle should not ever touch the horse’s spine.

.Clean horse before tacking up
