What are your responsibilities in terms of safeguarding?

A

Ensure all children know they are understood and can come and talk to me
Maintain an ‘it could happen to anyone anywhere’ attitude
Be aware of schools procedures relating to safeguarding
Being aware of the DSL and seeking advice if required
Understanding procedures to follow if concerns arise
Maintain levels of appropriate confidentiality

What would you do if you have any concern for a child’s safety or wellbeing, or the behaviour of another adult within school towards a child?

A

Discuss concerns with DSL as soon as possible
Remember it’s important to share concerns even if unsure
Remember anyone can make a referral to Children’s social Care - Jordan keeps number for emergencies in his office

What would you do if a child made a discosure to you?

A

Avoid acting shocked or having a big reaction
Listen to child without interrupting them. Don’t ask any leading questions
Never promise to keep a secret
Reassure them that it isn’t their fault and they did the right thing telling a trusted adult and it’s not their fault
Write down child’s exact words
Immediately go and discuss with member of safeguarding team
Keep the disclosure confidential

A

Photograph children without permission
Ignore inappropriate behaviour from children or other staff
Share personal details with children
Meet or communicate with children or parents about personal things outside of work
Discuss anything work related on social media

Physical

Bad relationship with parent or carer
Flinching around parent or carer
Withdrawn

Sexual
Bruising or bleeding in intimate areas
Not age appropriate language or displays of affection
Sudden change in behaviour
Reluctance to undress around others
Reluctance to be around particular person
Poor concentration, appetite, sleep patterns

Emotional
Concerning interactions between child and carer (lack of affection, overly critical, etc.)
Lack of self esteem
Self harm or eating disorders
Lack of empathy towards others
Signs of distress

Neglect
Dirty clothes/dirty child
Hunger
Dental or medical neglect
Lack of personal hygiene
Being excessively overweight or underweight
Self soothing techniques that aren’t age appropriate like thumb sucking

Raise all concerns with SLT (Jordan)
Cornerns about the headteacher to be taken to the nominated governor
Be aware of the whistleblowing policy
If I feel unable to raise concern with SLT, I’d talk to the NSPCC whistleblowing helpline
