Types of safety hazards
Biologic hazards Sharps Chemical Radioactive Electrical Fire or Explosive Physical
main source is infectious agent which may lead to bacteria, fungal, viral, or parasitic infections
Biologic Hazards
Source of biologic hazard
patients that contract or carry the pathogen
How to break transmission of biologic hazard
proper handwashing, biohazardous trash disposal, decontamination, and specimen bagging PPE. Aerosol prevention, sterile or disposable equipment, and pest control standard precautions, immunization, healthy lifestyle, exposure control plan, postexposure prophylaxis
Hazard from needles, lancets, and broken glass. Risky for cuts, punctures, bloodborne pathogen exposure
Sharps
This hazard sources include preservatives and reagents which may expose person to toxic, carcinogenic or caustic agents
Chemical
Hazard in equipment and radioisotopes, which put people at risk of radiation exposure
Radioactive
Hazard from ungrounded or wet equipment and frayed cords which may cause burns or shock
Electrical
Hazard from bunsen burners or organic chemicals which may cause burns or dismemberment
Fire or Explosive
Hazard from wet floors, heavy boxes, and patients, which put people at risk for falls, sprains, or strains
Physical
Duration of handwashing
40-60 secs
-all patients are assumed to be possible carriers of bloodborne pathogens
Universal precaution
