sampling Flashcards
1
Q
why sample?
A
- Used to estimate population size & distribution.
- Reduces time & effort compared to counting everything.
2
Q
sampling methods
A
- Random Sampling – avoids bias.
- Use a random number generator to place quadrats.
- Systematic Sampling
- along a gradient.
- Place quadrats at regular intervals (e.g., transect line).
- Mark-Release-Recapture
- for mobile organisms.
- Capture, mark, release, then recapture.
- Kick Sampling – for aquatic organisms.
- Kick riverbed, use net to collect disturbed organisms.
3
Q
estimating population size
A
(total area of habitat / area of sample unit) x mean number of individuals per sample unit
4
Q
what to consider
A
- Sample size must be large for accuracy.
- Standardization ensures fair comparisons.
- Avoid harm to organisms & habitats.
