sampling Flashcards

1
Q

why sample?

A
  • Used to estimate population size & distribution.
  • Reduces time & effort compared to counting everything.

Q

sampling methods

A
  • Random Sampling – avoids bias.
  • Use a random number generator to place quadrats.
  • Systematic Sampling
  • along a gradient.
  • Place quadrats at regular intervals (e.g., transect line).
  • Mark-Release-Recapture
  • for mobile organisms.
  • Capture, mark, release, then recapture.
  • Kick Sampling – for aquatic organisms.
  • Kick riverbed, use net to collect disturbed organisms.
