sampling plants Flashcards
(6 cards)
what is a gridded quadrat used for
-estimating % cover of a species
how to use a gridded quadrat
-identify species using key
-record % cover for each species in the quadrat
-smaller squares = more accurate representation of abundance
whats a point frame quadrat
-can be inserted in a quadrat
-records any plants touching needles
-10 needles used 10x is 100 readings
whats a line transect
-string/tape measure across habitat w samples taken along the line
-records plants touching the line at intervals
whats a line transect useful for
-examining the effect of a change in habitat on biodiversity
-such as a stream running through a field/wood
-doesn’t reflect density/abundance
whats a belt transect
-interrupted belt transect is using quadrats along a line at intervals
-continuous belt transect is using quadrats along the entire length of the line
-smaller intervals are more accurate but take longer
