Q

Failure of British military leadership

A
  • Burgoyne intended to strategically work with Howe and st leger to take Albany, New York
  • Howe failed to communicate with Burgoyne- instead of moving north, Howe took his army and captured Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia was not of strategic success, more symbolic
  • without reinforcements, Burgoyne was surrounded and forced to surrender at the battle of Saratoga in 1777
  • Burgoyne- army moved very slowly and had a very heavy baggage train- which delayed thei advance and left them vulnerable to attack, often met with resistance from local militias
  • burgoynes failure at Saratoga could have been prevented if how had supported him- so his defeat was partly due to broader strategic failure
