Anaphora
The repetition of the same word or group of words at the beginning of successive clauses
I.e. We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds.
Chiasmus
A sentence strategy in which the arrangement of ideas in the second clause is a reversal of the first.
I.e. Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.
Stichomythia
Dialogue in which the endings and beginnings of each line echo each other taking on a new meaning with each new line
I.e. Hamlet thou hast thy father offended.
Mother you have my father much offended
Antithesis
The juxtaposition of contrasting ideas in balanced phrases
Or they found themselves mentally engaged yet detached.
Apostrophe
Breaking off disclosure to address some absent person or thing some abstract quality and inanimate object or a nonexistent character.
Hyperbole
An extravagant statement; the use of exaggerated terms for the purpose of emphasis or heightened effect
Irony
The use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning. A statement or situation where the meaning is contradicted by the appearance or presentation of the idea
Litotes
A figure of speech consisting of an understatement in which an affirmative is expressed by negating its opposite.
I.e. She’s not the brightest girl in the class
Understatement
A figure of speech in which a writer or a speaker deliberately makes a situation seem less important or serious than it is.
I.e. Hitler wasn’t a very nice man.
Parallel Structure
Refers to a grammatical or structural similarity between sentences or parts of a sentence; it involves an arrangement of words phrases sentences
I.e. He was walking, running and jumping for joy
Abstraction
Refers to words or phrases that name things not knowable through the five senses
Analogy
A similarity or comparison between two different things or the relationship between them. Makes something more familiar
Allusion
A direct or indirect reference to something which is presumably commonly known, such as an event book myth place or work of art
Epistrophe
A repetition of the same word or groups of words at the ends of successive phrases. Anaphora but at the end
Paradox
Is a statement which contradicts itself. May seem absurd. Travels hidden truth (coherent meaning)
Parody
A work that closely imitates the style or content of another with the specific aim of comic effect or ridicule. Funny YouTube song videos
Pun
Is a play on words which are identical or similar in sound which have sharply diverse meanings.
