schizophrenia
psychiatric disorder characterized by a breakdown in relation between thought, emotion, and behavior which leads to faulty relationships, skewed perception, and inappropriate actions while withdrawing from reality
symptoms of schizophrenia
positive symptoms: involving excess or distortion of normal function such as delusions, hallucinations, inappropriate affect, incoherent speech/thought, odd behavior
negative symptoms: involving a reduction or loss of normal function such as affective flattening, decrease in speech, motivation, and inability to experience pleasure
treatment of schizophrenia
antischizophrenic drugs such as chlorpromazine, which decrease dopamine activity by blocking its receptors
cause of schizophrenia
people inherit a potential for schizophrenia that must be activated, sometimes by early experiences which alter neurodevelopment; excess of dopamine receptor activity
how schizophrenia affects patient
onset in early adulthood, dissociate from reality as their brain perceives everything differently and they become completely lost in their world… hallucinations, delusions, etc so they lose ability to participate in regular society
