Schizophrenia Criteria A
2 of the following, and at least 1, 2, or 3
1) Delusions
2) Hallucinations
3) Disorganized speech
4) Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
5) Negative symptoms
Schizophrenia Criteria B
Level of functioning decreases in work, interpersonal relations, OR self-care (no time limit, or qualifier—judgement call)
Delusions
False fixed beliefs.
False belief based on incorrect inference about external reality that is firmly held despite what almost everyone else believes and despite what constitutes incontrovertible and obvious proof to the contrary.
Hallucinations
False fixed perceptions
Perception-like experience without external stimulation of the relevant sensory organ

1) Delusions

4) Disorganized or Abnormal Motor Behavior

-Bizarre
-Thought Insertion
-Thought Withdrawal

Bizarre Delusion
False fixed belief in clearly implausible phenomena occurring
Thought Insertion
False fixed belief that thoughts are not one’s own and inserted into mind by others.
Thought Withdrawal
False fixed belief that some thought are taking out of client’s mind.
Thought Broadcasting
False fixed belief that some thoughts are being broadcast aloud so that they are perceived by others
Somatic Delusion
False fixed belief pertaining to alteration or functioning of body organs
Nihilistic Delusion
False fixed belief in non-existence of self or part of body
Erotomania Delusion
False fixed belief that another person (usually of higher status) is in love with the individual
Referential Delusion
False fixed belief that events or coincidences have strong personal significance
Persecutory Delusion
False fixed belief that someone or something is out to harm, harass, attack, persecute, or conspire against the individual
Types of Hallucinations
Auditory (Sound)
Visual (Sight)
Olfactory (Smell)
Tactile (Touch)
Gustatory (Taste)
Can be mood congruent or incongruent
Echolalia
Mimicking another’s speech
Echopraxia
Mimicking another’s movements
Prodromal Symptoms
Any symptoms that signals impending onset of a disorder
Prodromal Symptoms of Schizophrenia
-Deterioration in hygiene
-Social Withdrawal
-Odd behaviors
-Odd thinking
-Outbursts of anger
-Loss of volition
-Decrease in performance
Schizophrenia Criteria C
6 months rule AND 1 month rule
Must note continuous signs such as prodromal/residual/psychosis for 6 months
AND 1 month must be active symptoms found in A above
The 1 moth rule is met if treatment such as medication/hospitalization is effective making the time frame less than a month
Schizophrenia Criteria D, E, & F
D) Cannot have schizoaffective disorder, depressive or bipolar with psychotic features has been ruled out
E) disturbance not attributable to substance use/abuse or medical condition
F) if history of autism spectrum disorder or communication disorder of childhood onset must specify that hallucinations or delusions are present for one month
-Disorganized speech IS REMOVED FROM THE MUST HAVE LIST OF 3 in criteria A
Hypnagogic
Relating to the state immediately before falling asleep–refers to hallucinations while falling asleep,
Hypnopompic
Relating to the state immediately before waking up–refers to hallucinations while waking up
