what is schizophrenia?
chronic mental health disorder affecting how people think and feel
symptoms split into positive and negative
define positive symptoms of SZ?
- behaviours in addition to normal behaviours
E.G: delusions, hallucinations, disorganised thinking
What are delusions?
- Fixed & strongly held false beliefs, persistent even with conflicting evidence
- experience of loss of control over mind and body
- not derived from ordinary life experiences
e.g: erotomanic, nihilistic and grandiosity
What is a grandiosity delusion?
Belief that one has exceptional abilities, wealth, or fame
What are erotomanic delusions?
Belief that another person is in love with the individual
What do nihilistic delusions involve?
Conviction that a major catastrophe will occur
What are hallucinations?
- Perception-like experiences that occur without an external stimulus
- sensations that aren’t real can occur in all senses
What is the most common type of hallucination in schizophrenia?
Auditory hallucinations, Voices perceived as distinct from the individual’s own thoughts
What are tactile hallucinations?
Sensations such as formication, resembling small insects crawling on the skin
What types of hallucinations are considered normal?
Hypnagogic = occur while sleeping hypnopompic= while waking up
What is disorganized thinking?
- result of abnormal thinking process
- occur mainly through speech :
derailment= switch from one topic to another
tangentially= answer may be slightly or complete irrelevant to context
What is derailment in disorganized thinking?
Switching from one topic to another
What are negative symptoms in schizophrenia?
- Avolition
- alogia
- flat effect
*anhedonia - catatonic behaviour
define negative symptoms?
- disruption to normal emotions or behaviour often mistaken for depression
What is avolition?
- Decrease in motivation
- difficulty beginning or maintaining goals or tasks
What is alogia?
word salad
diminished speech output: reduction in amount and quality of speech
What is anhedonia?
loss of pleasure from all activities
what is catatonic behaviour?
- range from fast repetitive behaviour to no movement at all
- echopraxia= mimicking other
- rigid and unnatural posture
