How to write a blog?
Headline/Title: appeal to target group, interesting)
Introduction: - interesting beginning, topic + purpose, opinion + explain position
Main Part:
- directly address readers (target group), convincing arguments + explanations, examples + sources, own knowledge, most important -> possible counter
Conclusion: - sum up position + main arguments, general final statement + outlook, invite readers to comment
How to write a summary?
- use own words
- express briefly the main idea and relevant details
- basic idea of what was read + what it is about + what the author wanted to communicate
- Who? What`When? Where? Why? How?
- title + headings + opening and closing lines of paragraphs
- title, author, source
- keep it short, no opinion of your own, present tense,
How to write an analysis?
- consider + assess aspects, structure, ALWAYS QUOTE WHOLE PROOFES
- for example: interesting names, contrasting personalities, rhetorical devices, title, quotations, direct/indirect speech, tone, layout, structure, choice of words etc
How to write a discussion?
- present tense, personal opinion
- introduction, main part, conclusion
Introduction: introduce the reader to the topic and arouse interest
Main Part: Pro- and Contra- Arguments, start with strongest contra and end with weakest, start with weakest Pro and end with strongest Pro
(include proof)
Conclusion: NO NEW IDEAS, summary of the topic, own opinion
What is the difference between discussion and comment?
The comment is similar, just that there you do not have to focus on the opposite opinion.
= state your own clear opinion on the topic, supporting evidence included, you want to convince them
How to write a characterization?
direct characterization v. indirect characterization!!!
- take notes first, structure and sort, focus on what is said, how he sees himself and how he acts
- draw conclusion -> adjectives
- Introduction: character’s name, role he or she plays, general statement
- outward appearance, direct information then the conclusion from indirect characterisation
- > TEXT REFERENCES! “NAME IT - QUOTE IT - EXPLAIN IT”
- Conclusion with summary about what the reader learns about character, did character develop during plot?
How to write a mediation?
- what is the task? Who are you writing to? What do you need to do? What kind of text are you writing and why?
- needed, important information and maybe additional information that is not in the text
- structure text
- do not translate 1-1 - use your own words, paraphrase
- how to connect aspects and information?
How to write an article?
- title
- like a direct conversation with the reader
- introduction: who is the reader? target group -> get attention, arouse interest!!!!
- make it interesting and engaging
- give it a purpose
- use facts, quotes and so on
- not too formal
- catchy
- keep personal opinion VERY LOW
- make it easier to read, structure, paragraphs, be clear
- urge reader’s to think, offer pieces of advice or suggestions, provide information
- maybe make it fun?
- write a good ending
How to write a speech?
Introduction:
- greeted + addressed audience
- thanked my hosts for inviting me and my audience for being there
- told a joke or what not to arouse interest
- introduced topic + points to cover + purpose/intention
Main Part:
- put a clear focus on ideas + own purpose
- convincing arguments + possible counterarguments (weaken them)
- referred to supporting examples, facts, experiences, values -> speak directly to listener’s background
- use text + material + additional knowledge
Conclusion:
- indication that I am concluding
- repeat most important point(s), final memorable statement, call for action, look into future, promise, whatever
- thanked audience for listening
Final Check:
- all relevant info included, purpose fulfilled, focused on audience and intention, clearly stated ideas, linked ideas convincingly, short and simple language with good vocabulary, rhetorical devices
How to analyse an author’s style?
- key aspects in style of writing:
- sentence length, structure, variation, position, literary devices, sound devices, use of dialogue, word choice, tone, accents, irony
Types of style:
A) expository or argumentative style
- subject-orientated, tells reader about exact subject or topic, no opinion
B) descriptive style
- found in fiction, describes with all senses, metaphors, literary devices, describes things as they are
C) persuasive style
- argumentative, own opinion
D) narrative style
- construct and communicate a story, fiction & non-fiction, every longer piece of writing
