science Flashcards
(28 cards)
solar system
a collection of planets, moons, and other objects rotating around a central star.
A planet
A large spherical object moving around in a orbit around a star.
Astroid
Pieces of rock, mostly found in the Astroid belt in-between Mars and Jupiter
Comet
pieces of dust and rock and water that travel in orbit around space. They have tails made up of gas and ions
dwarf planet
an astroid that orbits the sun, Pluto is a dwarf planet
meteor
pieces of astroids that burn up in atmosphere that form shooting stars
JSUN
Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune, planets made up of gas
MVEM
Mercury Venus Earth Mars
Planets made up of Rocks
Gravity
Gravity is the force that attracts objects to itself, the suns gravity forces Earth to orbit instead of getting lost in space
Earth moves through space
460 meters per second
Goldilock zone
means it has liquid water which is important for life
Orbit
Orbit is when a object revolves around another object. Earths orbit takes one year
Axis
Axis is an imaginary line around which the earth spins, full rotation takes 24 hours, the rotation causes day and night
New moon
The Moon is between Earth and the Sun; we can’t see the Moon.
waxing Crescent
A small sliver (crescent) of the Moon is visible on the right side.
First Quarter
Half of the Moon is visible (right half).
Waxing gibbous
More than half is visible, still getting fuller.
Full Moon
The entire face of the Moon is lit up.
Waning gibbous
The light starts to shrink from the right; still more than half visible.
Last Quarter (or Third Quarter)
Left half of the Moon is visible.
Waning Crescent
Only a small crescent is visible on the left before it goes dark again.
Solar Eclipse
The Moon blocks sunlight from reaching Earth.
Lunar Eclipse
The Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the Moon.(Blood Moon)
Star
gas sphere(mostly hydrogen and helium)
