Science Flashcards
Until the 1500’s, most people believed that the Earth was _______________ and that the sun and the stars _______________ around the earth.
flat; orbited around
What do we believe now about how the movement of the sun and the Earth?
The Earth revolves (or orbits) around the sun.
Describe the rotation of the Earth.
The Earth is spinning on its axis, which are the North and South Poles. One rotation of the Earth takes 24 hours (or 1 day).
Describe the Earth’s revolutions.
As the Earth is rotating (or spinning) it is also orbiting (or revolving) around the sun. One revolution of the Earth around the sun takes 365 ¼ days (or 1 year).
What is a lunar month?
The time it takes for the moon to pass through all of its phases.
About how many days does it take for the moon to orbit around the Earth?
Around 27 days
About how many days is one lunar month?
About 29 days
Draw a diagram illustrating the phases of the moon.
[Show Teacher]
What are tides?
Changes in Earth’s water level (of the oceans and seas)
What causes the Earth’s tides?
The gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun.
Describe and draw a Spring Tide.
Moon and Sun are pulling in the same direction. This tide has the greatest tidal variation. [have Teacher check drawing]
Describe what is meant by “greatest tidal variation”.
It has both the highest and the lowest tides.
Describe and draw a Neap Tide.
Moon and Sun are pulling at right angles to each other. [have Teacher check drawing]
