science Flashcards
(18 cards)
Adaptation
the act or process of changing to better suit a situation.
Species
A species is often defined as the largest group of organisms in which any two individuals of the appropriate sexes or mating types can produce fertile offspring
Evolution
In biology, evolution is the change in the characteristics of a species over several generations and relies on the process of natural selection.
Fossil
the remains or impression of a prehistoric organism preserved in petrified form or as a mold or cast in rock.
Fossil record
The fossil record, history of life as documented by fossils, the remains or imprints of organisms from earlier geological periods.
Trait
a distinguishing characteristic or quality, especially of one’s personal nature: bad traits of character.
Selective Breeding
Selective breeding, also known as artificial selection, is a process used by humans to develop new organisms with desirable characteristics
Natural Selection
the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring
Generation time
Generation time is the average interval between the birth of an individual and the birth of its offspring.
Speciation
the formation of new and distinct species in the course of evolution.
Relative Dating
Relative dating is the science of determining the relative order of past events, without necessarily determining their absolute age
Absolute Dating
Absolute dating is the process of determining an age on a specified chronology in archaeology and geology.
Geologic Time Scale
The geologic time scale is a system of chronological dating that classifies geological strata in time.
Extinct
something that does not exist anymore it’s gone.
Plate Tectonics
a theory explaining the structure of the earth’s crust and many associated phenomena as resulting from the interaction of rigid lithospheric plates which move slowly over the underlying mantle.
Primate
A primate is any member of the biological order Primates, the group that contains all the species commonly related to the lemurs, monkeys, and apes, with the latter category including humans
Hominid
Hominids are the group of primates that includes humans, gorillas, and chimpanzees, among others.
Homo sapiens
Homo sapiens, the species to which all modern human beings belong. … Homo sapiens is one of several species grouped into the genus Homo,.
