science- atoms test Flashcards
(14 cards)
gamma rays
are the release of pure energy, usually occurring after the element has undergone alpha or beta decay. The energy that has built up during the decay is released. The energy does not change the element like alpha and beta
radioactive material
is a radioisotope (unstable) which emits radiation , when exposed to organic life/other atoms, has the ability to change the atomic structure of the element it comes in contact with.
What is a harmful about radioactive material
can cause cancer, death
where is radioactive material found naturally
space,sun rays, soil
Fusion
Combining small atoms into bigger ones which produce large quantities of energy
Fission
Splitting of large atoms into smaller ones which produce large quantities of energy
valence electrons
The electrons in the outer most shell
radiation
energy released as unstable atoms decay into more stable forms
radioisotopes
radioisotopes are the unstable form of an element that emits radiation to transform into a more stable form. Radioactive decay is the only way to make them stable
beta particles in a smoke detector
have a higher penetrating power than alpha particles, so they would pass through the smoke and not trigger the alarm.
An example of fusion
The sun, as all day everyday it uses fusion
An example of fission
nuclear power plant
why do we use carbon 14 in half lide
because carbon-14 is measuarble and in the atmosphere, we also know how long it takes to decay.
Why are X-rays and gamma rays used in medical imaging?
to generate images of tissues and structures inside the body.
