science- atoms test basic 2 Flashcards
(14 cards)
ION
when atoms lose or gain electrons we stop calling them atoms and call them IONS
cation
Cations are positively charged ions, meaning they have more protons than electrons.
anion
anions are negatively charged ions, meaning they have more electrons than protons
what are the rings around the nucleus called
shells
what is radioactive decay & why do atoms do it
atoms do radioactive decay beacuse their nuclei are unstable, to become stable they release particles (beta & alpha). sometimes because there nucleus is so big that it just cant hold itself together
what particles do gamma rays emit
electromagnetic waves
alpha shortcut
-4 from mass number & -2 from atomic number
beta shortcut
0 from the mass number & +1 to the atomic number
alpha
is an atom whose neucleus is just to big, so it spts out 2 neutron and 2 protons in order to slim down. this is an alpha particle also know as Helium
beta
in beta decay a neutron turns into a proton and electron. the elcetron comes out super fast and the electron is the beta particle
half life
when a radioisotope has undergone 50% of its decay cycle
radiation how its caused and how it occurs
Radiation is caused by the release of energy, either as electromagnetic waves or moving subatomic particles,
periods
elements in the same period have the same number of occupied electron shells.
groups
Elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons.
