Q

What are the parts of blood?

A
  1. Plasma (the biggest part).
  2. Red blood cells (little more than half of the blood).
  3. White blood cells (very small part of the blood).
  4. Platelets (very small part of the blood).

6
Q

What does plasma do?

A
  1. It carries food to the cells from the digestive system.
  2. It carries away the cell’s wastes.
  3. It provides cells with water.
  4. It moves some chemicals (adrenaline, for example) from one part of the body to another.

Q

What do red blood cells look like?

A

They are shaped like discs with a dimple on each side and they are bright red when they are carrying oxygen. After they give the oxygen to the cells their color turns a darker red.

Q

What do white blood cells look like?

A

They have different shapes and sizes. They might change size and shape as they work.

11
Q

How do white blood cells protect your body?

A
  1. wrap around and break down germs, pieces of waste matter, dead cells or cells that are carrying germs.
  2. Make chemicals that kill germs.

Q

How many white blood cells does a body have?

A

The number white blood cells is always changing. When the body needs to fight infection it makes more white blood cells.

13
Q

Are all white cells in the blood vessels?

A

No, they are not. some squirm their way between your body cells and attack germs there.

Q

What are platelets?

A

They are pieces of cells that float in the blood. They are not complete cells.

15
Q

What do platelets do?

A

They form blood clots. When a blood vessel is cut, platelets are there to stop the bleeding.

16
Q

How do platelets work?

A

They clump together and stick to the edges of the cut. They help form a clot which is a plug made with long sticky threads.

17
Q

What are blood vessels?

A

Blood vessels are the highways your blood uses to move through your body.

18
Q

What are the types of blood vessels?

A
  1. Arteries
  2. Capillaries
  3. Veins
19
Q

What are arteries?

A

They are blood vessels that carry blood away from your heart to other parts of your body.

20
Q

Describe the arteries:

A

They have thick, muscular walls that stretch when the heart pushes blood. They branch into smaller and smaller tubes. Almost every artery carries blood with lots of oxygen.

21
Q

What is a capillary?

A

The smallest kind of blood vessel.

22
Q

How small is a capillary?

A

Side by side, ten of these tiny blood vessels are barely as thick as one hair. some are so narrow that red blood cells flow through them in a single file.

23
Q

Describe the capillaries:

A

The walls are only one cell thick.

Gases can pass through their walls.

24
Q

How do capillaries work?

A

Oxygen moves from the blood in your capillaries to your cells. Carbon dioxide and other wastes go in the other direction. They move from your cells to the blood in your capillaries.

25
Q

What are veins?

A

They are blood vessels that take blood from the cells back to the heart.

26
Q

What are veins made of?

A

Capillaries join together to from your tiniest veins. These tiny veins join many times to form larger and larger veins.

27
Q

What are valves and where are they?

A

Veins have valves. They are flaps that act like doors to keep blood flowing in one direction. Valves open to allow blood to flow to the the heart. They close if the blood begins to flow away from the heart.

28
Q

Do arteries and capillaries have valves?

A

They don’t. The pumping of the heart keeps the blood flowing in the right direction through them.

29
Q

What are the parts of the heart?

A

The heart has 4 parts.

  1. Right atrium
  2. Right ventricle
  3. Left atrium
  4. Left ventricle
30
Q

How does the heart work?

A

Each side of the heart works as a separate pump and sends blood along different paths.

  1. The right side pumps blood to the lungs. There it gets oxygen and gives up carbon dioxide.
  2. Then the blood flows to the left side of the heart.
  3. The left side pumps the blood through arteries to the body.
31
Q

What is the name of the upper part of the heart?

A

Atrium.

32
Q

What is the name of the lower part of the heart?

A

Ventricle (each one is larger and more powerful than the atrium).

33
Q

Are there blood vessels in the muscles of the heart?

A

Yes, the blood in these vessels gives the muscles oxygen, food, and water.

34
Q

What is the shape of the heart?

A

Not all hearts are alike. Reptiles only have three parts, or chambers. Fish have two chambers.

35
Q

How does the heart pump blood?

A
  1. They pump in a repeating pattern.
  2. The left and right atrium pump first.
  3. Then the two ventricles pump.
  4. After a brief rest, the pattern is repeated.
36
Q

Is the order of the pumping important?

A

Yes, VERY important. You can become very sick if it does not follow the pattern of pumping.

37
Q

How many times does your heart beat during your life?

A

Almost 3 billion times.

38
Q

What happens to your heart when you exercise?

A

Your heart pumps faster to get extra oxygen to your muscles. It pumps more slowly when you are sleeping or sitting quietly.
