Science - Chemistry (Atoms and Compounds) Flashcards
(31 cards)
What are the 3 parts in an atom
Electron (negative charge)
Proton (positive charge)
Neutron (no charge)
How to calculate the number of neutrons
Atomic mass minus the atomic number
What are isotopes
Atoms with the atomic number but different atomic masses
What are exothermic reactions
Where the reactants give out energy to water or air such as photosynthesis. The products have more energy than the reactants
What are endothermic reactions
Where reactants gain energy from surroundings such as combustion. The products have less energy than the reactants
What do metal atoms form
Cations (positive ions)
What do nonmetal atoms form
Anions (negative ions)
What are ionic compounds
When metals and non-metals react together to gain full valence shells
