Science Earth Flashcards
study (24 cards)
Sphere
a round solid figure, or its surface, a celestial body
Gravity
Force and attraction between two objects with mass
Hemisphere
Half of a sphere
Equator
Horizontal line running around the center of the earth at 0 degrees latitude
Prime Meridian
Vertical line running from the north pole to the south pole at 0 degrees.
longitude. Runs through Greenwich, England
International Date Line
Vertical line running from north pole to south pole at 180 degrees
longitude. (Approximately- Zig-zag around countries)
Latitude
Horizontal lines going around earth, from east to west, lines are north of equator or south of the equator.
Longitude
vertical lines running east and west from prime meridian to the international line prime meridian=0 degrees
Rotation
Earth spinning around its tilted axis.
Revolution
The motion of earth revolving around the sun, it takes 365.25 days to make a full revelution
Coriolis Effect
wind and ocean currents bending
New Moon
When the moon is between the sun and the earth and it is completely dark
Gibbous
Most of the moon is lit up.
Crescent
a sliver of the moon is lit up
Waxing
Getting bigger, (Think MAXING).
Waning
Getting smaller
How Earth got its shape
It is big enough to have a sphere shape. The size has to be 200 kilometers to get to the potato radius
Describe Earth’s Rotation
Earth rotates on its tilted axis, it takes 23.5 hours to have a full rotation
Describe how rotation causes the coriolis effect
when the earth rotates it makes the wind and ocean bend the same way it is rotating
What does the coriolis effect do to storms on the planet
makes the storms spin
Describe Earth’s Revolution
the earth orbiting the sun.
Describe how the revolution of the Earth causes the seasons
Earth is tilted on its axis and some of earth has sun and other parts have less light. More light = warmer weather
Describe how the seasons are different in the northern and southern hemisphere
If it is summer in the northern hemisphere it is winter in the southern hemisphere, and if it is summer in the southern hemisphere it is winter in the northern hemisphere
Describe the phases of the moon and what causes them
the moon phases change depending how the sun, earth and moon are placed. The phases are new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent
