Science Flashcards: Cells and Systems
(18 cards)
Name all of the organ systems and explain the organs that belong in each system:
Respiratory system
Organs- Nose, Mouth, Trachea, Diaphragm, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs.
Excretory system
Organs- Kidneys, bladder, lungs, skin, liver.
Muscular system
Organs- muscles, tendons
Nervous system
Organ- Brain, spinal cord, nerves, eyes, ears, hands, nose, ect. any other sensing organs.
Digestive system
Organs- Salivary, glands, mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, gall bladder, small intestine, large intestine
What is the function of the Respiratory system?
Function- To transport outside air to the blood and transport carbon dioxide from the blood to the outside air.
What is the function of the Excretory system?
Function- Remove chemical and gaseous waste from the blood
What is the function of the Muscular system?
Function- Move bones, move organs that contain muscle tissue ( the heart and stomach)
What is the function of the nervous system?
Function- Coordinate and control the actions of all organs and organ systems
What is the function of the digestive system?
Function- Break down food pieces into smaller pieces to be absorbed and moved throughout the body
What is the order of the digestive system?
- Chew; let saliva break down food
- food goes down esophagus.
- stomach.
- gall bladder
- small intestine.
- large intestine.
- rectum.
- And lastly to your anus.
What is the order of the Respiratory system?
1.Nose
2. mouth
3. Trachea
4. bronchi
5. Bronchioles
6. Alvioles
What is the order of the circulatory system?
carries oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells, and removes waste products, like carbon dioxide.
-Heart
- Arteries
- Arterioles
- Capillaries
- Venules
- Veins
What are the types of digestions?
-Mechanical digestion
(The physical break-down of food)
Takes place: Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine.
-Chemical digestion
(Breakdown of large particles by enzymes)
Takes place: Mouth, stomach, small intestine
*How do the small intestines function?
The small intestines break down food and turn them into juices to the body so the nutrients can be used.
What are the effects of smoking?
-Hard to breath
-Asthma
-Lung cancer
-Chest pain
Know about the scientists we talked about:
What is dialysis?
The removal of waste products from the blood using a machine that functions as a kidney.
What are the diffident types of blood vessels and their functions?
Blood vessels are designed to carry/ transport blood.
Types of blood vessels and their functions:
Arteries- Carry blood AWAY from the HEART
(arteries are thick and muscular)
Veins- Carry blood TOWARDS the HEART
Capillaries- Tiny blood vessels that CONNECT the ARTERIES TO the VEINS
(capillaries are thin)
In the nervous system, what do nerves do?
They carry signals or messages from the brain and spinal cord to different parts of the body.
In the nervous system, what do axons do?
-Is a tail-like extension of the cell body
-sends electrical impulses to the next cell
How does the small intestine function?
-partly digested food comes from the stomach
-Once it reaches the small intestine it will break down the food even further using enzymes
- The small intestine absorbs the majority of the nutrients which then gets sent to the blood stream.
(The small intestine also uses chemical digestion when breaking down the food further)
