Science flashcards: Mechanical systems
(7 cards)
Know what the Roman engineers and Archimedes contributed to mechanical systems:
Roman engineers
-Built complex systems of adequate to bring fresh water into their towns and cities.
Archimedes
- The Archimedes screw was named after the famous Archimedes
-used to move water through a spiral like motion from a lower level to a higher level.
All of the different simple machines:
simple machines-Are tools or devices made up of one basic machine
-Levers
-Screw
-Pulley
-Wheel and axle
wedge
-inclined plane/ramp
Levers:
Advantage-A lever uses less force to move an object
Disadvantage-You must move the lever a great distance
How do you calculate mechanical advantage?
Calculate the MA (mechanical advantage) if the Output force (Fo) is 180N and the Input force (Fi) is 45N
MA=Fo/Fi =180N/45N =4
How do you calculate the speed ratio?
Calculate the SR if the input distance is 4m and the output distance is 1m
SR=di/do =4m/1m =4
How do you calculate the Efficiency?
What is the efficiency of a machine with a MA of 2 and SR of 3?
Eff=MA/SRx100 =2/3x100 =0.66x100 =66.666 =67% (Round up answer to whole percent)
