Science Test 1 Flashcards
(25 cards)
Observation
What you can detect with your senses or with tools (things that you can actually sense)
Inference
A conclusion made from evidence or reasoning based on observations (things that are suppose to happen based on observations)
Qualitative observations
Observations that are descriptive and use your senses. (sight, sound smell).
Quantitative observations
Observations that involve numbers and/or measurements
Model
explanation based on what you inferred, tested and prior knowledge
Precision
Exactness of a measuring device and the range of values in a set of measurments.
Accuracy
Closeness of a measurement or calculation comes to true value.
The scientific method - Step 1
Ask a question
The scientific method - Step 2
Do background research
The scientific method - Step 3
Construct a hypothesis
The scientific method - Step 4
Design an experiment to test your hypothesis
The scientific method - Step 5
Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment and record data
The scientific method - Step 6
Create a chart of graph of your data
The scientific method - Step 7
Analyze your data and draw a conclusion
The scientific method - Step 8
Report your results (Was your hypothesis correct?)
The scientific method
Process that is used to find answers to questions about the world around us
Hypothesis
An educated guess based on observations and your knowledge. (if… then…)
Data
Info gathered during experiment. (organized into table and graph)
Independent variable
Something that is changed by the scientist (only one thing at a time)
Dependent variable
Something that might be affected due to the change caused by the independent variable
Controlled variable
a variable that is not changed
Conclusion
Your results or findings based on data collected during the experiment
Smallest increment
the smallest interval for the instrument used for calculating
Digital instrucment
Measurement that is displayed on the screen. The last digit is the uncertainty because it can fluctuate. (No extra estimation)
