Science Test 2 Flashcards
(25 cards)
Food web
The natural interconnection of food chains and a graph that shows of what-eats-what in an ecological community.
Food chain
A food chain is a linear network of links in a food web
Energy Pyramid
A model that shows the flow of energy from one level to the next in an ecosystem
Predator-Prey
Predators hunt and kill other animals for food (prey). (Lion and zebra)
Parasite-Host
Parasites live on or inside another organism (the host) and consuming the nutrients the hosts gained, often without immediately killing the host. (Tapeworm and human)
Herbivore-Plant
Herbivores consume plants or parts of plants
Scavenger-Carrion
Scavengers feed on dead animals (carrion). (Vulture and dead deer)
Decomposer
consume decaying organic matter, recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem. (Earthworms and bones)
Mutualism
both organisms benefit, often involving some form of feeding. (Crocodile and bird)
Commensalism
One organism benefits while the other is neither harmed nor helped. (Remora fish and sharks)
Intraguild Predation
This occurs when species at the same trophic level prey on each other.
Dynamic
(of a process or system) that shows constant change, activity, or progress.
Ecosystem
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Matter
physical substance in general. Something that occupies space and possesses rest mass
Interconnected
having all constituent parts linked or connected.
Invasive species
An invasive species is an introduced species that harms its new environment
Carrying capacity
The maximum number of individuals in a species that an environment can support for the long term
Predators
an animal that naturally preys on others
Cause and effects
The impact created by the subject
Niche
the position of a species within an ecosystem
Limiting factors
A factor present in the environment that controls the growth, abundance, or distribution of a population of organisms in an ecosystem (Availability of food, climate, predators, etc)
Autotrophs
Self-feeding plants
Heterotrophic nutrition
Feeds on others
Excretion
The process of eliminating or expelling waste matter (pee poo)
